OUR PARTNERS AND THEIR IMPACT

Overview:

The Kenosha Literacy Council (KLC) is a nonprofit organization dedicated to improving adult English literacy across Kenosha County. Since 1965, KLC has offered one-on-one tutoring, small group classes, citizenship preparation, and family literacy programs, all led by trained volunteers. Each year, more than 600 adult learners strengthen their reading, writing, and communication skills with the support of over 200 volunteer tutors. By helping adults gain confidence, pursue education, and access better job opportunities, KLC empowers learners to build brighter futures for themselves, their families, and the community.

Literacy Council Impact

Thanks to funding from United Way of Kenosha County, the Kenosha Literacy Council helped Juliya find her voice and her place in a new country. When she arrived from Russia, she couldn’t speak English and relied on her husband to communicate. Through ELL Civics, book club, and job readiness classes, Juliya gained confidence, built friendships, and recently started her first job in the United States. She has now read three books in English and says learning here is not only helpful but joyful. With support, Juliya didn’t just learn a new language. She built a new life.
