How Does United Way of Kenosha County Help?

United Way of Kenosha County empowers people to get on financial ground with proven methods by focusing on assisting individuals to improve living and employability skills and working with them to demonstrate management and acquisition of assets.  The result is thriving communities where everyone has more opportunity to succeed.

As many as one-third of working Americans do not earn enough money to meet their basic needs.  Wages have not kept pace with the rising cost of housing, healthcare, and education.  Currently, 40 million Americans are working in low-paying jobs without basic health and retirement benefits.  For families walking a financial tightrope, unable to save for college, a home, or retirement, United Way is here to help.

Homebuyer Education and Counseling prepares people for sustainable home ownership and fosters financial empowerment. HRI offers monthly 6-hour home buyer education workshops in English and Spanish. These classes are facilitated by our staff and conducted in collaboration with local mortgage lenders, Realtors, insurance agents, and home inspectors. The program providse buyers with an overview of the homebuying process from the experts and it also instills the importance of being responsible homeowners. The client and counselor review the documents, identify any obstacles to being approved for a mortgage, and develop a personal action plan to overcome the obstacles on a short- or long-term basis. During subsequent follow-up appointments and as the client completes action plan items, the action plan is revised and updated until it is completed. Once clients have completed their plans, staff help them get preapproved by a lender of their choice by preparing the clients’ loan package. Once approved, we supply lists of reputable real estate professionals from which clients may choose, coordinate down payment and closing costs, and work with them throughout the purchase process until they close.
