Meet United Way of Kenosha County: Sue Mielke Brings Friendship to Tax Prep

By mobilizing the caring power of our community, United Way of Kenosha County (UWKC) makes a lasting impact — together. How? From helping Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) clients get the most out of their tax refund, serving on governing committees and advocating to tutoring elementary school-aged learners, reading with students and painting Born Learning Trails (And so much more throughout our community!), UWKC volunteers bring our vision to life.

Our vision: a community where all individuals and families in Kenosha County achieve their human potential through education, income, and healthy lives.

sue-vita-volunteer-tax prepToday, we introduce you to a volunteer, Sue Mielke, who has made a difference right here in our community by living up to the meaning of living united. Sue is a dedicated Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) volunteer, who has helped Kenosha residents get the most out of their tax returns for close to 20 years. This tax season, Sue helped oversee student volunteers from Carthage College and University of Wisconsin-Parkside, while also helping with other tasks like quality review and tax prep.

Sue finds VITA to be a vital service to our community because she knows taxes can be really intimidating. Many people are not aware of all qualifying tax credits available, or they do not know what a qualified dividend is. Volunteers like Sue have the training and knowledge to break taxes down to be understandable and doable. We’re proud that new and returning clients know they can trust VITA volunteers to make filing taxes that much easier. Plus, friendships form along the way!

“The clients we serve have become like friends,” says Sue Mielke, long-term UWKC and VITA volunteer. “We get to catch up once a year.”

Several returning clients have utilized VITA services for 10+ years, so when they walk in for their appointment, it is like running into an old friend — comforting and cheerful. The relationships formed are a true testament to Sue’s dedication and service.

Thank you for all your hard work, Sue! All of us at United Way of Kenosha County appreciate your dedication to our community.
