Basic Needs Focus Area 

Purpose: 

The Basic Needs focus area was organized to support programs and services for individuals and families that will help them to meet life’s basic needs (shelter, food, clothing, and transportation), and gain economic stability through education, job training, permanent housing and basic supportive services that will ultimately promote self-sufficiency. United Way supports programs for people living in poverty, the “working poor” and survivors of violence or disaster.

I. Emergency Services

Objective: Provide access to programs that help individuals and families in crisis that work to ensure that basic needs met

Program Impact:
Provide programming that will:

a. Work to ensure immediate basic needs of food, shelter and clothing are provided
b. Offer rent, mortgage and utility assistance services to individuals and families in crisis
c. Provide the elderly, disabled and youth with needed basic support and crisis stabilization services

II. Transitional Support

Objective: Increase access to programs and services that provide quality comprehensive social services and case management that work to move individuals and families toward self-sufficiency

Program Impact:
Provide programming that will:

a. Provide quality services and support to help move individuals and families out of crisis and work toward stabilization
b. Provide services and programming that promotes economic stability for at-risk and low income individuals and families
c. Provide assistance to the elderly and disabled that will offer opportunities to live as independently as possible

III. Self Sufficiency

Objective: Increase access to programs and services that strive to enable at-risk and low-income individuals and families to increase income, gain employment and increase the opportunity to obtain permanent, safe housing.

Program Impact:
Provide programming that will:

a. Develop job skills and
b. Remove barriers to work
c. Increase English and/or financial literacy skills
d. Provide services that help to eliminate barriers to home ownership and offer opportunities to obtain permanent housing
