Alexis de Tocqueville National Leadership in Giving Society
Included in the Diplomat Society of prestigious community leaders is The Alexis de Tocqueville Society. Alexis de Tocqueville was a young aristocratic Frenchman who visited the United States in 1831. His most important observation during his extensive travels was that Americans helped each other in times of need. He saw volunteerism as a way of life that was typically American.
United Way of America chose the name Alexis de Tocqueville when forming this national leadership society of special donors who contribute $10,000 or more annually to United Way. These generous donors exemplify de Tocqueville’s spirit of voluntary association which he discovered and admired so immensely in America.
